Alexander E. Hay is a Professor in the Department of Oceanography at Dalhousie University, within the Faculty of Science. His research focuses on physical oceanography, acoustical oceanography, and sediment dynamics, with particular emphasis on tidal energy systems, subaqueous granular flows, and coastal processes. He has held the Killam Professorship in Oceanography from 2013 to 2018 and is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America since 1994.
Dr. Hay earned his BSc and MSc from the University of Western Ontario and his PhD from the University of British Columbia. His work integrates field measurements, advanced acoustic instrumentation, and numerical modeling to study turbulence in high-flow environments, sediment transport mechanisms, and the acoustic properties of granular media.
Key research areas include:
- Tidal energy systems and turbine array wake dynamics
- Sediment transport and bedload dynamics in coastal and submarine environments
- Acoustic remote sensing techniques for oceanographic applications
- Coastal morphodynamics and megatidal beach evolution
His recent publications highlight innovations in acoustic Doppler profiling, turbulence measurement in tidal channels, and the acoustic characterization of granular materials. He has contributed to major field campaigns such as the 2008 St. Lawrence cruise and the Advocate Harbour 2013 study. Dr. Hay teaches courses including OCEA 5250 (Acoustical Oceanography) and OCEA 5221 (Ocean Dynamics).
