Alexander Diener is a Professor of Geography and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Kansas, specializing in political, cultural, and social geography. He holds a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has held roles at institutions like Pepperdine University and George Washington University, alongside Fulbright and Title VIII fellowships.
His research focuses on geopolitics, borders, migration, and urban landscape change, with expertise in Central Eurasia and Northeast Asia. He has authored/co-authored four books and published widely in geography and area studies journals. Key interests include place attachment, territorialization, and the intersection of identity and mobility.
Diener teaches interdisciplinary courses on political geography, border studies, and regional development. He is affiliated with the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies, Center for East Asian Studies, and Environmental Studies Program at KU. Awards include the 2006 SSRC Teaching Fellowship and the 2025 Smithsonian Expert designation.
