Dr. Alexander Coutts is an Assistant Professor of Economics at York University's Schulich School of Business since 2020. His research bridges behavioral economics, experimental economics, and development economics through innovative field and laboratory experiments.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Economics, New York University
His work focuses on belief formation, information processing, and behavioral responses in conflict zones and developing economies. Methodologically, he combines lab experiments with large-scale field studies in Rwanda and Mozambique to analyze social preferences, corruption dynamics, and risk-taking behaviors.
Scientific Awards:
- 2019 Editor’s Award for Best Paper in Experimental Economics
As a resident member of NOVAFRICA research center, he investigates psychological biases in economic decision-making. His field experiments on public goods games and corruption measurement have produced groundbreaking insights about the persistence of social norms and elite capture. Current projects examine gender biases in feedback provision, belief elicitation under ambiguity, and motivated beliefs in health behaviors.
