Dr. Alexander Brand is a Lecturer at the European Management School (EMS), Mainz, and a Research Associate at the Institute of Political Science, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. His work focuses on International Relations theory, development policy, media influence on global politics, and the role of sports in international dynamics. He holds a PhD from the Technical University of Dresden (2010) and has held academic roles since 2002, including research positions at Dresden University and teaching roles since 2011.
Research interests include constructivist approaches to international relations, US foreign policy, and the intersection of sports (particularly football) with geopolitical issues. He co-edits the Sport&EU Review and serves on the editorial board of Political Science Applied. Notable awards include the Lohrmann Medal (2002) and DAAD/Henry Arnhold scholarships (1998-1999).
His research projects include analyzing development policy through a securitization lens and exploring Europeanization via football governance. Recent publications address US-Latin American relations, German development policy shifts, and media constructions of climate change.
