Dr. Alexander Belyy is an Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, affiliated with the Enzymology group at the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBSB). His research focuses on structural biochemistry of bacterial proteins and toxins, particularly their interactions with the actin cytoskeleton, using cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to elucidate molecular mechanisms. Key research themes include Tc toxins, Type VI secretion system (T6SS) toxins, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa effector proteins like ExoY.
Recent studies highlight his work on F-tractin–F-actin complexes for actin imaging, Tc toxin injection mechanisms, and membrane-depolarizing T6SS toxins. Collaborations, such as with D. Shatskiy on F-tractin structure, underscore his contributions to advancing structural biology and biophysics. His research bridges microbiology, biochemistry, and cell biology, with implications for understanding bacterial pathogenesis and developing diagnostic tools.
