Alex Yu-Ting Lin is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Global Affairs at the University of British Columbia, affiliated with the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (part of the Faculty of Arts). He holds a nonresidential affiliation with the University of Notre Dame’s International Security Center. His research focuses on revisionism, US-China relations, and Asian security dynamics, particularly how smaller states influence rising powers’ perceptions of status and order.
Lin earned his PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Southern California. He has held research fellowships at the George Washington University’s Institute for Security and Conflict Studies and Harvard University’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. His work bridges academic and policy spheres, with publications in journals like the European Journal of International Relations and International Studies Quarterly, as well as policy outlets like The Diplomat.
Research interests include revisionist state strategies, information warfare, and geoeconomic competition in East/Southeast Asia. His award-winning book project, Contestation from Below, examines how smaller states catalyze revisionism among rising powers. Recent publications analyze China’s strategic narratives and US policy biases in Asian security studies.
Lin has received the 2022 Patricia Weitsman Award for his article on status loss and revisionism. His work intersects with grants from institutions like the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). He advises students in international relations and security studies, though formal advisee names are not listed.
Lin collaborates with interdisciplinary teams at UBC and global think tanks, focusing on future projects linking technology policy to geopolitical stability and multilateral institution reforms.
