Alex Wellerstein is an Associate Professor in the Science and Technology Studies Program at Stevens Institute of Technology's School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD from Harvard University (2010) and a BA from UC Berkeley (2002), both in History. His research focuses on the history of nuclear weapons, nuclear secrecy, and the intersection of science with public policy and culture. Wellerstein has authored two books: Restricted Data: The History of Nuclear Secrecy in the United States (2021) and the forthcoming The Atomic President: Harry Truman and the Making of the Nuclear Age (2025). He created the widely used NUKEMAP simulator and maintains blogs like Restricted Data and Doomsday Machines. His work bridges academic scholarship with public engagement through media appearances, museum collaborations, and digital projects.
Wellerstein has held roles such as Director of the Science and Technology Studies Program (2020–present), Farber Fellow (2017–2019), and postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard Kennedy School and the American Institute of Physics. His awards include the 2022 Jess H. Davis Memorial Award and 2014 NSF Vizzies finalist recognition for NUKEMAP. He advises institutions like the Outrider Foundation and consults for media projects like the television series MANHATTAN. His courses explore topics like nuclear history, science communication, and the post-apocalyptic imagination.
Research interests include presidential nuclear authority, Cold War science governance, and visualizing nuclear impacts. Grants funded projects like OpenSIOP (Future of Life Institute) and Oregon Road '83 (Outrider Foundation). His writing appears in venues ranging from The New Yorker to academic journals, emphasizing accessible science communication and critical historical analysis.
