Alex Peralvarez-Marin is a Research Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, where he leads the Laboratory of Molecular Neuropharmacology, Biophysics and Bioinformatics within the Institute of Neuroscience (INc). With an h-index of 18 and over 1100 citations, his research has significantly contributed to understanding ion channels and membrane proteins through 61 research outputs and 5 major projects.
His research primarily focuses on the structure-function relationships of ion channels, particularly TRPV2, and their implications in neurological conditions. His work spans from molecular determinants in ion channels to microglia-oligodendrocyte communication, combining experimental biophysics with computational approaches. Key research areas include membrane protein dynamics, amyloid proteins related to Alzheimer's disease, and the mechanisms of membrane disruption by peptides.
His recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory toward understanding TRPV2 channels and their therapeutic potential for hypertension treatment. His work also examines how cell-penetrating peptides and neuropeptides like Dynorphin A interact with and disrupt cellular membranes, which has significant implications for drug delivery systems and neurodegenerative disease mechanisms.
Dr. Peralvarez-Marin has secured substantial research funding through multiple competitive grants, including projects from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO), European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), and the European Commission. His current projects include molecular determinants in ion channels (2021-2025), microglia-oligodendrocyte communication (2018-2020), and TRPV2 structure-function relationships (2011-2014).
He leads the Laboratory of Molecular Neuropharmacology, Biophysics and Bioinformatics, which employs a multidisciplinary approach integrating FTIR spectroscopy, cryo-electron microscopy, computational modeling, and molecular biology techniques to investigate membrane proteins and their roles in neurological conditions and vascular physiology.
