Alex Newman

Dr Alex Newman is a Grantham Centre Research Associate within the Faculty of Science, University of Sheffield. Based in the Hicks Building on Hounsfield Road, he specialises in holistic sustainability assessment of fast-moving consumer goods and leads work on the EU-funded BUDDIE-PACK project that develops sustainable strategies for reusable plastic packaging.

Education:

• PhD – University of Sheffield (industrially sponsored; topic: holistic sustainability assessment frameworks).
• MEng (Hons) First Class – Chemical and Biological Engineering, University of Sheffield (2020).

Research Interests:

Dr Newman’s research integrates environmental, economic and societal dimensions of sustainability. He deploys multi-criteria decision-making techniques within life-cycle assessments to guide strategic transitions toward sustainable industrial ecosystems. A parallel focus is the creation of quantitative social-impact characterisation models to better capture human and community effects of production and consumption systems.
