Alex Mayfield is an Assistant Professor of History at Asbury University, specializing in global Christian history with a focus on pentecostal and charismatic movements, East Asian mission history, and the intersection of religion and technology. He joined Asbury in 2022 and has held positions including Postdoctoral Fellow at Boston University (2021-22). His academic training includes a Ph.D. from Boston University, M.Div. from Boston College, and B.A. from Oral Roberts University.
Research interests center on digital methodologies reconstructing historical networks in global Christianity. His book The Kaleidoscopic City (2023) examines early Pentecostalism in Hong Kong. Current projects include the China Historical Christian Database (CHCD), the largest dataset on Christian actors in China 1550-1950, and a digital edition of Robert Morrison’s correspondence.
Publications span global Christianity, pentecostal print culture, and colonial religious history. Awards include a National Endowment for the Humanities Digital Humanities Grant (2021-22). He serves as Co-PI on CHCD, technical advisor to the Chinese Christian Posters project, and Senior Associate Editor of Pneuma journal. His work bridges historical scholarship with digital humanities innovations.
