Alex Lyford is an Assistant Professor of Statistics at Middlebury College since 2017. He holds a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Georgia. His research focuses on machine learning, text analysis, statistics education, and math games. He teaches courses such as Data Science Across Disciplines, Mathematics of Board Games, and Statistical Learning, emphasizing interdisciplinary applications.
Lyford’s teaching spans departments including Biology, Environmental Science, Geography, and Sociology, integrating real-world datasets and R programming. He advises students interested in data science research and hosts monthly Board Game Night in the Math department to foster community engagement.
His recent work includes analyses of disaster vulnerability using social media data, genetic disorder impacts on preterm infants, and gaze-pattern studies in statistical education. He actively contributes to data science education initiatives and collaborates with community partners on research projects.
