Abby Lau serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Lafayette College, joining the faculty in fall 2025 with expertise in applied statistics for health and environmental applications.
Her research program focuses on developing novel statistical methodologies for complex real-world datasets. Key specializations include correlated data structures, extreme value analysis, and measurement error correction, primarily applied to biomedical and ecological challenges. This work bridges theoretical statistics with practical problem-solving in critical public health and environmental domains.
Professor Lau teaches MATH 186: Applied Statistics and MATH 336: Mathematical Statistics, employing highly structured pedagogical approaches that connect new concepts to prerequisite knowledge. She integrates her research into classroom instruction through hands-on applications, fostering student confidence while maintaining predictable learning environments. Outside academia, she pursues bird-watching—a hobby sparked by her passion for board games like Wingspan—which informs her observational approach to data patterns.
