Alex Louise Barwick is a Lecturer in Allied Health and Midwifery within the Faculty of Health at Southern Cross University. She holds a BPod, BHlthSci(Hons), and PhD from the University of Newcastle, awarded in 2016 for research on diabetic foot pathology. Her academic roles include coordinating the School of Health & Human Sciences Honours program and teaching podiatry, pedorthics, and interprofessional practice using blended learning approaches.
Research interests focus on preventative foot care, including vascular testing for peripheral arterial disease, diabetic foot complications, and integrating research skills into healthcare education. Methodologically, she employs quantitative and qualitative approaches, with recent work emphasizing footwear design for ulcer prevention and N-of-1 trial methodologies. Alex is a member of Diabetes Australia and the Australian Podiatry Association, contributing to clinical practice guidelines and workforce development initiatives.
Her teaching portfolio spans high-risk foot management, anatomy, orthotic therapy, and online pedagogy. Notable research contributions include systematic reviews on diagnostic accuracy of ankle-brachial indices and meta-analyses of foot bone density in diabetes. Current projects address footwear efficacy for neuropathic patients and challenges in healthcare honours programs.
