Professor Alex Lazarian is an academic at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, holding a joint appointment in the Department of Physics. His research focuses on theoretical astrophysics, particularly MHD theory, interstellar dust, turbulence, and molecular clouds. He has extensive teaching experience, having instructed courses such as "Evolving Universe", "General Astrophysics", and "Astrophysical Turbulence".
- Education: Diploma in Theoretical Physics under Vitaly Ginzburg, Soros Fellowship at Oxford University, PhD in Applied Mathematics at University of Cambridge
- Research Interests: MHD Theory (Reconnection, Dynamo Theory), Interstellar Dust (Alignment, Microwave Emission), Interstellar Turbulence (Statistical Studies), Circumstellar Regions/Comets (Polarization), Molecular Clouds (Dynamics)
His students include current PhD candidates Diego Gonzalez-Casanova and Vanessa Maria Lopez Barquero, as well as former advisees who completed their doctorates between 2004-2014. Lazarian has developed publicly available MHD simulation data and code, and his career trajectory includes postdoctoral positions at Austin, Harvard, and Princeton before joining UW-Madison in 1999. Research collaborations span institutions like CITA and include development of compressible MHD models for various astrophysical conditions.
