Alex Jansen is a Continuing Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Film and Media at Queen's University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Science. He combines academic engagement with over 20 years of professional experience in the film and media industry. Jansen teaches part-time and maintains strong ties to Kingston’s creative sector through his multimedia production company, Pop Sandbox, and his role as founding Commissioner of the Kingston Film Office.
His research interests span media and communications, film studies, cultural studies, and digital media innovation. Jansen’s career highlights include producing award-winning films, video games, and interactive experiences showcased globally at festivals like Cannes and SXSW. His work with Pop Sandbox emphasizes cross-disciplinary storytelling and immersive media.
As founder of the Kingston Canadian Film Festival (celebrating its 20th anniversary) and architect of the Kingston Film Office, Jansen has driven local economic impact through film production infrastructure. Under his leadership, the Film Office attracted major productions like Star Trek: Discovery and generated over $5 million annually by 2021. The office was also nominated for a global Top Film Commission award in 2022.
Jansen’s earlier career included building the Home Entertainment division at Mongrel Media. His current academic contributions focus on bridging industry practice with academic theory in film and media studies.
