معرفی
Dr. Alex Garvin is a Lecturer in Cancer Biology at the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Leeds. His research is centered on the role of SUMOylation and deSUMOylating enzymes (SENPs) in DNA repair, genome stability, and cancer pathogenesis, particularly in Lung Squamous Cell Carcinoma (LUSC).
His research interests include:
- SUMOylation and Ubiquitylation signaling
- DNA repair mechanisms
- Genome stability and chromatin dynamics
- Role of SENP enzymes in cancer
- Function of atypical SUMO family members (e.g., pseudoSUMO)
Dr. Garvin's recent publications highlight a strong focus on the regulatory roles of SENP6, SENP7, and SENP2 in DNA damage response and cancer, with a notable 2025 paper identifying SUMO4 as a novel regulator of SENP1. His work bridges molecular mechanisms with therapeutic applications in oncology.
Scientific awards include:
- Academy of Medical Sciences Springboard Award
He leads the Garvin SUMO Biology Lab, which actively investigates the therapeutic potential of targeting SUMOylation in cancer. His lab collaborates with structural and cancer biologists and is funded by competitive national grants. He has advised or collaborated with researchers such as Rosie Wilkins and works alongside Elton Zeqiraj. His lab is involved in broader research networks, including the Astbury Biostructure Laboratory and Genome Damage and Stability research communities.
