Professor Alex Fink is a Professor in Pure Mathematics at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary University of London. He serves as the Head of the Centre for Combinatorics, Algebra and Number Theory (CeCANT). His research focuses on matroid theory, tropical geometry, algebraic combinatorics, and algebraic geometry, with a particular emphasis on algebro-geometric interpretations of matroid invariants and tropical geometry applications.
Prof Fink holds a PhD from UC Berkeley and previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher at North Carolina State University. His research has been supported by grants from EPSRC and the EU Horizon 2020 program, including projects on matroid Hodge theory and tropical differential geometry. He contributes to the academic community through editorial roles at the Bulletin and Journal of the London Mathematical Society, and Theoretical Computer Science A, and has organized conferences such as the Queer and Trans Mathematicians in Combinatorics 2023.
His recent articles explore topics like tropical scheme theory, matroid polytopes, and Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties. He has advised six PhD students and currently leads a research group including postdoctoral researchers like Basile Coron. Fink’s work bridges combinatorial and algebraic methodologies, advancing interdisciplinary research in pure mathematics.
