Spencer Backman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Vermont, within the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. His research focuses on algebraic and geometric combinatorics, with applications to matroid theory, graph theory, tropical geometry, and nonarchimedean geometry.
- Ph.D. in Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization from Georgia Institute of Technology (2014)
- B.A. in Mathematics from Oberlin College (2007)
Spencer’s work explores combinatorial structures through algebraic and geometric lenses, including tropical geometry, matroid base polytopes, and chip-firing games. His recent publications address generalized Dyck paths, convex building sets, and higher categorical associahedra.
He has participated in international programs such as the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative and conducted postdoctoral research across South Korea, Italy, Germany, and Israel. Additional interests include connections between tropical geometry and classical algebraic geometry.
