Dr. Alex Elswick is an Assistant Extension Professor at the University of Kentucky's Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Department of Family Sciences. He joined the department in 2020, after earning his Ph.D. and M.S. in Family Sciences from the University of Kentucky and a B.A. in History from Centre College with a minor in Political Science.

Dr. Elswick’s research focuses on long-term recovery from substance use disorder, particularly through the lens of recovery capital—an assets-based framework for understanding addiction recovery. His extension work emphasizes building community-level recovery resources and reducing stigma through education. He co-founded Voices of Hope, a Lexington-based non-profit advocating for individuals with substance use disorder.
He teaches courses including FAM 475: Substance Use, Family and Society, FAM 402: Family Resource Management, and HON 152: Addiction is a Chronic Disease. His expertise bridges academic research with practical community interventions.
