Alex D Marsh serves as Professor of Public Policy at the University of Bristol's School for Policy Studies, with critical affiliations to the Bristol Poverty Institute and Cabot Institute for the Environment. He chairs the Housing Studies Charitable Trust and Policy & Politics Management Board, reflecting his leadership in housing policy discourse.
His academic foundation includes:
- B.Sc. from the University of Warwick
- M.Soc.Sci. from the University of Birmingham
Marsh's research integrates housing policy and smart city innovation, emphasizing rental market regulation (rent control, standards enforcement) and systems-thinking approaches to housing strategy. His secondary focus explores citizen-centric institutional frameworks in urban technology, developed through sustained collaboration with Anáhuac University in Mexico City, where he examines governance gaps in smart city development.
Recent publications (2024-2025) reveal converging themes: institutional change in global smart city projects and evidence-based regulatory improvements in private rental sectors. This work bridges housing economics, urban governance, and participatory policy design, demonstrating methodological rigor in complex systems analysis.
He has supervised 7 postgraduate researchers and secured 14 competitive grants, notably the ESRC-funded ECOSCIM project (2019-2022) advancing citizen-oriented smart city innovation in Mexico. His grant portfolio highlights expertise in interdisciplinary urban policy research funding.
Marsh actively contributes to the Cabot Institute's Urban Research Cluster and City Futures initiatives, leveraging international networks to address housing inequality and democratic technology governance through collaborative, institutionally grounded frameworks.
