Professor Alex Cameron is a faculty member at the University of Warwick, affiliated with the School of Life Sciences. His research focuses on understanding the structural and functional mechanisms of membrane transport proteins and channels, particularly their roles in drug discovery and cellular responses to carbon dioxide. He leads a research group within the university's Cells & Development cluster.
- PhD in Chemistry, University of York (1993)
- BSc in Biophysics, University of Leeds (1989)
His work revolves around two key areas: (1) sodium-coupled secondary transporters (BASS and NCS1 families) using X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM, and (2) Connexin26 channel modulation by carbon dioxide. Collaborative efforts with Professor Nicholas Dale explore implications for respiratory disease mechanisms.
Research combines structural biology with biochemical experiments and functional assays to elucidate conformational switches in membrane proteins. Techniques include radio-labelled transport assays, site-directed mutagenesis, isothermal titration calorimetry, and microscale thermophoresis.
Current affiliations include: Professor at University of Warwick (2017-present), former Associate Professor (2012-2017), and Senior Research Fellow at Imperial College London (2012-2013). Previous roles span leadership positions at Nerviano Medical Sciences, Pharmacia, and postdoctoral research at University of York and Uppsala University.
