Alex Birdwell is a Teaching Professor at Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering. He serves as Academic Advisor, Co-Director of the Design Thinking and Communication program, and faculty advisor for the NU Robotics Club, collaborating with Professor Nick Marchuk. His career spans teaching, advising, and research in biomechanics, robotics, and engineering education.
- PhD, Mechanical Engineering, Northwestern University
- MS, Mechanical Engineering, Northwestern University
- BS, Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Tech
Alex's research focuses on robotics, biomechanics, and rehabilitation engineering, with notable work on prosthetic hand control and neuromuscular interfaces. His engineering education research examines first-year student advising and technology integration in teaching.
Recent publications highlight his dual focus: 2018 studies address academic advising and design education, while earlier works (2014-2007) explore prosthetic control, muscle activation, and biomechanical modeling. These span disciplines including biomedical engineering and neuroscience.
Scientific Recognition:
- 2016 Cole-Higgins Award for Excellence in Advising
- 2013-2014 Faculty Honor Roll (Northwestern's Associated Student Government)
Alex's advising philosophy emphasizes student self-sufficiency and path optimization. He co-developed the "Birdwell Model" (2007) for vibrissal system analysis, now a recognized tool in neurophysiology research.
