Alex Abramovich

Alex Abramovich holds the Canada Research Chair in 2SLGBTQ+ Youth Homelessness and Mental Health at the University of Toronto. As a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (effective 2023-01-01), Dr. Abramovich focuses on improving health outcomes and services for 2SLGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness in Canada.

Dr. Abramovich employs community-based, qualitative, and mixed-method research approaches to develop policies and change practices aimed at preventing and reducing homelessness among 2SLGBTQ+ youth. A key aspect of the research involves using administrative health data to study the mental health of transgender youth in Ontario and evaluating targeted housing programs for 2SLGBTQ+ Canadian youth.

Dr. Abramovich has been recognized with the prestigious Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) award from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

2SLGBTQ+ youth represent up to 40% of youth experiencing homelessness in North America. They face discrimination and intersecting forms of stigma that have serious consequences for their health and well-being, often leading to significant mental health issues that require specialized interventions and support systems.
