Professor Aletta Kraneveld is an active faculty member at Utrecht University, holding a Full Professor position in Interdisciplinary Translational Pharmacology since 2016 with appointments in both the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. She currently serves as Vice Dean for Research in the Faculty of Science since March 2020. Her academic career spans over three decades, beginning with her PhD in Pharmacology at Utrecht University in 1994, followed by postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Kraneveld's educational background includes an MSc in Pharmacy from the Universities of Amsterdam and Utrecht (1983-1989) and a PhD in Pharmacology from Utrecht University (1990-1994). She has earned multiple teaching and research qualifications from Utrecht University, including Senior Qualification in Research (2001), Basic Qualification in Teaching (2001), and Senior Qualification in Teaching (2021).
Her primary research focuses on immunopharmacology, specifically targeting the interactions between innate and adaptive immunity and host-microbe interactions in chronic inflammatory disorders. The Kraneveld group investigates the gut-immune system-brain axis to enhance understanding of how intestinal microbiota, immune systems, and nervous systems interact in chronic conditions affecting the gut, airways, and central nervous system. Her work employs state-of-the-art in vivo models and cell systems to study the importance of intestinal microbiota, its ligands/metabolites, and receptors in immune system tuning with consequences for local and remote organ functions.
Her publication record includes 368 research outputs with an h-index of 49 and over 7,452 citations (as of June 2021). She has published in top journals including Nature Medicine (2 papers), American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (2 papers), Pharmacological Reviews, PNAS, Trends in Pharmacological Sciences, and Gut.
