Alessio Murgia is a researcher affiliated with the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Groningen and SMART Movements (SMART) at UMCG. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals focusing on health and well-being. He specializes in biomechanics and prosthetics, with a focus on upper limb functionality, musculoskeletal modeling, and virtual reality (VR) applications in rehabilitation.
His research interests include analyzing biomechanical factors in conditions like clubfoot, optimizing prosthetic control systems, and evaluating VR environments for prosthesis training. Recent studies explore co-contraction in muscle dystrophy patients and skill transfer in upper limb prosthesis use.
Murgia has actively supervised PhD student Xiaoping Zheng and contributed to academic activities such as organizing the 10th Dutch Bio-medical Engineering Conference. His collaborations span biomechanical analysis of elbow prostheses and shoulder stability studies. He frequently presents at conferences, addressing topics like joint loading in elbow arthroplasty and VR-based rehabilitation protocols.
