Alessandro D'Emilio serves as Associate Professor of Rural Buildings and Agro-forest Land Planning (AGRI-04/C) at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Catania. Appointed in December 2006 after winning a public competition, he currently holds leadership roles including President of the Degree Course Council for 'Land and Landscape Management and Protection' since November 2022. His office is located at Via S. Sofia, 100, Catania, with office hours Wednesday 9:00-11:00 and Friday 11:00-13:00.
He graduated with honors in Civil Engineering from the University of Catania in 1993 (110/110 cum laude) and earned his Ph.D. in 'Rural Building and Land Management' in 2001. His research spans critical agricultural infrastructure domains:
- Static and functional optimization of livestock buildings, greenhouses, and agro-industrial facilities
- Microclimate control systems for agricultural environments
- Environmental sustainability of agrivoltaic installations
- Traditional rural heritage valorization and natural habitat protection
D'Emilio's scholarly contributions include over 70 publications in national and international journals and conference proceedings. His work demonstrates consistent focus on engineering solutions for animal welfare, renewable energy integration, and landscape conservation.
He received the National Scientific Qualification for Full Professor (SC 07/C1) in April 2018. Significant research leadership includes:
- Scientific responsible for the 2021 GreenGo s.r.l. agrivoltaic microclimate study agreement
- Leader of PRIN 2007 research unit on dairy housing for animal welfare in hot climates
- Coordinator of University Research Program on renewable energy for greenhouse sustainability
- Member of LIFE11 NAT/IT/000232 project coordination structure for dune habitat restoration
As an active educator, he chairs doctoral committees for 'Agricultural, Food and Environmental Science' since 2013 and teaches core courses including Territorial Infrastructures and Green Rural Building. He maintains professional affiliations with the Italian Association of Agricultural Engineers (AIIA) since 1997 and the European Society of Agricultural Engineering (EurAgEng).
