Giovanni Cascone is a Full Professor of Rural Buildings and Agro-Forest Land Planning at the University of Catania. He holds positions in the Faculty of Agriculture and the Department of Agricultural Engineering. His career includes roles as Department Head and institutional board member across multiple organizations.
Education: Civil Engineering degree (1982-83) from the University of Catania. Transitioned into academic roles, becoming Associate Professor (1992-2001) and Full Professor (2001-present).
Research Interests: Focuses on agricultural building design, livestock welfare, greenhouse microclimate optimization, soil solarization, ICT applications for traceability, and rural heritage conservation. Recent work includes studies on dairy cow behavior monitoring via computer vision and seismic analysis of traditional rural buildings.
Projects: Led over 20 research initiatives funded by EU, MIUR, and regional bodies. Notable projects include ammonia emission modeling (CIGR), innovative animal housing solutions (PRIN projects), and solarization techniques using advanced plastic films.
Affiliations: Member of AIIA, CIGR, EurAgEng, and ISHS. Served as Board member and Secretary of CIGR's Farm Buildings Technical Section (2011-2014). Coordinated international working groups on animal housing in hot climates (2015-2018).
Teaching: Taught courses on agricultural buildings, rural design, and tropical agro-structures at undergraduate and graduate levels since 1987.
