Alessandro Castellini

Dr. Alessandro Castellini is a Guest Teacher in the Department of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He holds a PhD in Gender Studies from LSE (formerly the Gender Institute), an MSc in Gender Studies from SOAS, University of London, and a BA in Japanese Studies from Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, Italy. His research bridges feminist theory, cultural studies, and the sociology of motherhood, with a focus on Japan and transnational translation practices.

Research Interests:

Dr. Castellini’s work examines the cultural construction of maternal violence in postwar Japan, postpartum disorders in contemporary Italian culture, and the role of translation in decentering Western academic hegemony. He advocates for translational pedagogy to foster inclusive, accountable education and has explored critical approaches to EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) in higher education.

Teaching and Professional Contributions:

He has taught courses such as Gender Theories: An Interdisciplinary Approach and contributed to LSE100’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion project. As a Higher Education Academy Fellow, he co-created scenario-based resources addressing micro-aggressions in classrooms, now used in LSE’s PGCHE training.

Current Projects:

• Investigating maternal violence discourses in Italian culture through postpartum disorder analyses.
• Advancing “translational pedagogy” to challenge Western-centric gender theories and academic language dominance.
