Alessandro Bianchi

Excmo. Sr. Dr. Alessandro Bianchi is a Full Professor of Urban Planning at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Reggio Calabria. He served as Rector of the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria from 1999 to 2006 and was Italy's Minister of Transport from 2006 to 2008 under the Prodi government. He holds a degree in Civil Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome (1970).

His academic career includes roles as Associate Professor (1987–1994) and Director of the Department of Architecture and Analysis of Mediterranean Cities (1995–1999). He coordinated the Regional Territorial Plan for Calabria (1993–1998) and directed the doctoral program in Urban Design and Mediterranean City Planning since 1998. He also led the CRUI (Conference of Italian Rectors) as Secretary General until 2006.

His research focuses on urban and territorial planning, with emphasis on Mediterranean cities and transportation systems. He directs the 'Immagini di Città' book series for Rubbettino Editore. He is a member of Spain's Real Academia de Ciencias Económicas y Financieras since 2007.
