Alessandro Alessio RUCCO is a Contract Lecturer in Christian, Late Antique and Medieval Archaeology (SSD ARCH-01/E) at Ca' Foscari University of Venice's Department of Humanities. Holding a PhD with honors (2019) from the same institution, he currently serves as a Fixed-Term Researcher of Type A (RTDA) since January 2022 and teaches Geospatial and Landscape Archaeology (6 credits) for the Digital and Public Humanities Master's program and Geoarchaeology (2 credits) for Ancient Sciences: Literature, History and Archaeology.
His research focuses on landscape archaeology and geoarchaeology, particularly examining the relationship between environment and landscape management through buried soils and alluvial contexts. With expertise in sedimentology, archaeobotany, and archaeomalacology, he has conducted extensive fieldwork across northern Italy, including Comacchio, Cesena, Nonantola, and Cupra Marittima. His methodological approach integrates traditional excavation with geophysical surveys (GPR, ERT), drone-based photogrammetry, and advanced GIS analysis.
Rucco's publication record shows strong thematic consistency in geoarchaeological investigations of medieval settlements, with recent work concentrating on the 'Borgaccio' site at Pieve Vergonte (2023). His research demonstrates interdisciplinary integration of historical cartography, geospatial analysis, and material culture studies. Current projects include 'The Venice Subsoil between Archaeology and Geology' (2021-present) and previous work on 'GEOARTE: Geoarchaeology in Pieve Vergonte' (2019-2020).
Scientific Recognition:
- Ottone D'Assia and Riccardo Francovich Award (2015)
- Reviewer for Medieval Archaeology journal (2019, 2021)
- Scientific committee participation for international conferences
Rucco actively supervises fieldwork and has directed numerous excavation campaigns, particularly at Cupra Marittima and Comacchio. His technical proficiency spans archaeological software (AutoCAD, QuantumGIS, ArcGIS), survey equipment (total station, GNSS), and drone operations (holding A1-A3 APR Pilot Certificate). Professional qualifications include registration as Level 1 Archaeologist (no. 8699) and certification for archaeological assessment documentation.
