Professor Alessandra Pernis is a faculty member at the Weill Cornell Medicine Graduate School of Medical Sciences and a Senior Scientist at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) Research Institute in New York. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying autoimmunity, particularly in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).
- MD, Columbia University Medical Center (1986)
- Bachelor’s Degree, Biochemistry, Barnard College (1981)
Her work centers on IRF4, a transcription factor critical for cytokine production, and Def6/IBP, a novel regulator of Rho GTPase-ROCK pathways and IRF4 function. She investigates how dysregulation of these proteins leads to age-associated B cell (ABC) expansion and sex-biased autoimmunity. Her recent publications highlight the role of ROCK kinases and epigenetic factors in autoimmune pathogenesis.
Scientific Awards:
- Irma T. Hirschl Trust Award
- Saydman Award, Columbia University Medical Center
- Silverberg Award, Columbia University Medical Center
Her research spans translational immunology, molecular signaling networks, and murine models to develop novel therapies. She also engages in industry collaborations as a consultant for ONO Pharma.
