Alena Pirok is an Assistant Professor of History at SUNY-Cortland. She previously served as an Associate Professor at Georgia Southern University's Department of History within the College of Arts and Humanities, with appointments since 2017.
- Education: B.A. from Southern Illinois University (2011), M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of South Florida (2013, 2017).
Research and Teaching Interests: Public History, Historical Memory, Ghost Lore, Prison History, and Dark Tourism. Her work bridges contemporary politics and cultural practices with historical interpretation, focusing on how sites like Colonial Williamsburg and prison museums shape collective memory.
Current Projects: A book manuscript on U.S. prison museums and their role in narratives of incarceration/justice. Digital initiatives include curating "The Old Dominion’s Ghosts" Story Map and co-creating public history platforms like @Remnantology on Twitter and Instagram.
Professional Roles: Co-Chair of the National Council on Public History's Labor Task Force (2023–present) and member of the Environmental Sustainability Committee (2018–).
