Alen Faiz

Dr. Alen Faiz is an Associate Professor and leader of the Respiratory Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology (RBMB) Lab at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He specializes in understanding respiratory system biology at genetic and epigenetic levels, particularly COPD and asthma, using bioinformatics and CRISPR technologies. He leads the UTS CRISPR Cas9 Facility and chairs the Institutional Biosafety Committee.

Education: PhD from the University of Sydney (2014), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University Medical Centre Groningen (2014–2018). He joined UTS in 2018 and became Senior Lecturer in 2021.

Research interests include molecular pathways in respiratory diseases, microbiome impacts on COPD, and SARS-CoV-2 infection mechanisms. His work has been recognized with the American Thoracic Society Rising Star Award (2018, 2019) and the ERS Lung Science Award (2020).

Key grants include projects on microbial transfer in COPD, lung metabolite responses, and AI tools for pulmonary fibrosis. He has authored over 200 publications, focusing on transcriptomics, epigenetics, and biomarker discovery.
