Aleksander Bursche is a full Professor in the Department of Numismatics and Museum Studies at the Faculty of Archaeology, University of Warsaw. Specializing in Roman and Barbarian numismatics, he examines relationships between the Classical World and Barbarian societies. He has held visiting professorships at Christian-Albrecht University in Kiel, New York University, and the American Numismatic Society.
His research encompasses:

Professor Bursche's recent work analyzes coin circulation as evidence of trade, migration, and elite interactions during the Migration Period in Central Europe. His projects focus on the Oder-Vistula region, Gothic invasions, and Baltic Sea connections, revealing how Roman coinage influenced barbarian societies through military recruitment, trade, and symbolic appropriation.
His scholarly contributions have been recognized with:
- Polonia Restituta order (2014) for archaeological research and cultural heritage protection
- Gilljam Prize for Ancient Numismatics (2015)
He coordinates major international projects including the Maestro-funded 'Migration Period between the Oder and the Vistula', FRCPL for Roman coin documentation, and IMAGMA on barbarian elite identities. As chief organizer of the 2021 XVI International Numismatic Congress in Warsaw, he leads global numismatic discourse while serving on committees of the German Archaeological Institute and International Numismatic Council.
