JUN.-PROF. DR. ALEJANDRO ECKER is an Assistant Professor of Politics and Communication in Ibero-America at Heidelberg University, affiliated with the Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies (HCIAS) and the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of Vienna and previously served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES). His research focuses on political institutions, multiparty systems, and their impacts on citizen behavior, employing experimental and computational methods.
Current research projects include intra-party politics in multiparty governments, analyzing racist hate speech via machine learning, and studying the consequences of political bargaining deadlocks. He has taught courses on quantitative data analysis, electoral behavior, and justice in sustainability transitions. His work is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, and MZES.
Recent publications explore voter preferences in coalition negotiations, portfolio allocation in Germany, and the influence of religious institutions on climate attitudes. Ecker advises on political processes in Germany and Latin America, contributing to media discussions on electoral dynamics and far-right politics.
