Alejandro Beltrán Ortega

Alejandro Beltrán Ortega is a researcher and faculty member at Universidad Complutense de Madrid's Department of Art History, with additional affiliation at Universidad Antonio de Nebrija in Madrid. He holds a PhD in Ancient History from Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2016) with a dissertation on epigraphy and territory in southern Asturia and northeastern Lusitania, supervised by Dr. Inés Sastre Prats and Dr. María del Rosario Hernando Sobrino.

His research focuses on Roman archaeology with particular emphasis on mining landscapes in the Iberian Peninsula, especially the Pino del Oro region in Zamora, Spain, and northeastern Portugal. His work employs landscape archaeology methodologies to understand territorial organization, social dynamics, and economic structures in Roman provincial areas. His research bridges archaeology, epigraphy, and historical analysis to reconstruct ancient mining operations, settlement patterns, and religious practices in Roman Hispania.

Beltrán Ortega's publications reveal consistent research trajectories examining Roman mining techniques, particularly gold extraction, the relationship between mining activities and territorial organization, epigraphic evidence from mining regions, and the integration of mining economies within broader Roman provincial structures. His work demonstrates particular expertise in analyzing bedrock mortars, mining landscapes, and the epigraphic record from mining zones.

His research has been instrumental in documenting the unique characteristics of Roman gold mining in northwestern Iberia, including the geoarchaeological evidence from Pino del Oro and the connections between mining operations and administrative structures in the Roman provinces of Lusitania and Asturia.
