She directs the BA in Media and Communications theory stream and supervises PhD students studying digital labor, media theory, and game ethnography.
Education:
- PhD, Indiana University (2017)
Her research examines how automation reconfigures creative work in game development, the cultural dimensions of neuro-wearables, and technopharmacological concepts in digital wellness. She employs ethnographic methods to study vocational passion, innovation rituals in tech cultures, and disconnection practices.
Chia's publications critically analyze game engines as infrastructure for the metaverse, procedural generation in creative labor, and ethics in digital wellbeing technologies. Her work reveals how automation stratifies creative work while expanding engine applications beyond gaming into manufacturing and AEC industries.
