Alden Starnes is a Professor of Mathematics at Carson-Newman University, where he has served since August 2001. His academic affiliation includes the Department of Mathematics and Physics. He holds a BA from Carson-Newman University and a PhD from Virginia Tech. His research interests focus on Statistics and Linear Algebra, with innovative approaches to teaching through ESAA simulated Baseball and Football.
His service roles at Carson-Newman include 22 years as the football PA announcer, faculty dual enrollment facilitator, campus statistician, two-year term as faculty chairman, and sponsorship of student organizations like Math Club, Mossy Creek Fellowship, and Student Veterans. Outside academia, he serves as an Adult Bible teacher and worship pianist at Buffalo Grove Baptist Church, and is a past president of the Starnes Triennial Association. He is also a member of the Jefferson County Genealogical Society, where he has delivered presentations on Carson-Newman’s geohistory.
Personal interests include golfing with family. He is married to Mary Starnes, with two adult children (Elizabeth and Enoch/Reanon) and a granddaughter, Julia Pires.
