Associate Professor Alberto Pugnale is an architect and academic specializing in computational design, AI-driven methodologies, and the integration of historical precedents into contemporary architectural practice. He holds a position at the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, where he co-directs the Advanced Digital Design + Fabrication (ADD+F) Research Hub. His work bridges theory and practice, focusing on sustainable design, structural innovation, and pedagogical advancements in architectural education.
Dr. Pugnale’s research explores AI applications in design optimization, acoustic shell structures, and the digital reinterpretation of historical architectural systems. Notable contributions include the development of the Aeolus Grasshopper plugin for acoustic shell design and the FloaTree system for AI-informed habitat structures. He has received prestigious awards such as the IASS Tsuboi Award (2023) and multiple IASS Design Competitions (2023–2024), alongside early-career recognition like the IASS HANGAI Prize (2007).
- Key Roles: Co-Director of ADD+F Hub, Associate Professor (Level D), Editorial Board Member of Nexus Network Journal and International Journal of Space Structures.
- Education Background: Academic career includes roles at Aalborg University (Denmark, 2010–2012) and invited lectures across Italy, France, China, and the U.S.
- Research Interests: Focus on computational morphogenesis, sustainable fabrication, and interdisciplinary collaboration between architecture and engineering.
His recent projects emphasize material efficiency, upcycling, and the ethical integration of AI in design workflows. Pugnale is a vocal advocate for pedagogical reforms, championing student-centered learning through digital tools and design portfolios.
