Alberto Pimpinelli is an Associate Research Professor at Rice University's Department of Materials Science and NanoEngineering. He served as Executive Director of the Smalley-Curl Institute (2012–2023) and holds a full Professorship at Université Blaise Pascal (France, on leave since 2012). He also served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland and as a Science and Technology Attaché for the French Embassy in the U.S. (2008–2012).
- Education: PhD in Physics (1990, University of Parma, Italy), M.S. in Physics (1986, University of Milan).
Research Interests: Focuses on statistical physics models of magnetism in insulating systems, crystal surfaces, and crystal growth. His work bridges theoretical physics and nanosciences, with contributions to solid-state physics and materials science. His early career included fellowships at the Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires and the Laue Langevin Institute in Grenoble (1991–1997).
Awards & Fellowships: Recipient of the Accademia dei Lincei Fellowship and European Union Fellowship.
Teaching: Taught courses on scaling concepts in 2D materials, polymer physics, and nanosciences. Active in curriculum development for introductory nanoscience programs.
Professional Roles: Served as a scientific reviewer for agencies including NSF, EU, and ANR. Maintains international collaborations through his affiliations with multiple institutions.
Labs/Teams: Associated with the Smalley-Curl Institute, fostering interdisciplinary research in nanotechnology and materials science.
