Dr. Alberto Cortes Ramos is a full professor at the University of Costa Rica, holding academic positions in both the School of Political Science and the School of Geography. He also serves as a researcher at the Center for Research and Political Studies (CIEP-UCR) and coordinates the Central America Chair at UCR. His education includes a Political Science degree from the University of Costa Rica, an M.A. in Development Studies from ISS in the Netherlands, and a PhD in Geography from Loughborough University, England.
His research focuses on Development, power dynamics, and politics in Central America, including geopolitical analyses, territoriality, and migration patterns—specifically between Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Currently, he is contributing to a bicentennial-focused interdisciplinary project exploring power, development, and state dynamics in Central America from 1821 to 2021.
Dr. Cortes Ramos collaborates with intergenerational research groups and institutions, emphasizing long-term historical perspectives and regional integration. His work bridges political science, geography, and development studies, addressing contemporary challenges in Central America through interdisciplinary lenses.
