Professor Albert Polman is a group research leader at the FOM Institute AMOLF in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and a professor of Photonic materials for photovoltaics at the University of Amsterdam. He has been a group leader at AMOLF since 1991 and served as its director from 2006-2013. He previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher at AT&T Bell Laboratories and completed his PhD at Utrecht University in 1989.
- University of Utrecht - PhD (1989)
Polman pioneered nanophotonics, focusing on light control at the nanoscale for photovoltaic applications. His work bridges optical physics and materials science, emphasizing fundamental studies and applied concepts in plasmonics, light management, and photovoltaic materials.
Recent publications highlight his work on plasmonic effects, topological silicon photonic lattices, and light escape angle optimization in solar cells. Collaborations span institutions like Caltech, AT&T Bell Labs, and international research teams.
His research trends emphasize light-matter interaction, thermodynamic modeling, and nanoscale energy conversion, with applications in solar cells and nanophotonic devices.
