Alastair Iles is Professor of Sustainability Transitions in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at UC Berkeley. His interdisciplinary research examines environmental policy and societal change through lenses of STS, environmental justice, and social science, focusing on three domains: greening chemicals, sustainable food systems, and sustainability transitions.
Education includes SJD in Environmental Law and Policy from Harvard University (2000). Previously worked as environmental lawyer before transitioning to environmental policy research.
Research investigates chemicals policy and politics (including green chemistry), sustainable food systems (agroecology, diversified farming), and rapid sustainability transitions. He co-founded the Berkeley Food Institute and served as Associate Director of the Berkeley Green Chemistry Center. Current projects examine bio-based chemicals, agroecology legitimacy, and political dynamics of structural change.
Publications consistently address sustainability transformations across chemical, agricultural, and energy systems, with recent emphasis on agricultural automation, land reform, and chemical industry reform. Work combines empirical case studies with theoretical frameworks from science and technology studies.
Honors include Chancellor's Sustainability Award, CNR Teaching Award, and Faculty Mentor Award. Teaches courses on environmental policy, sustainability, green chemistry, and food systems.
