Liz Carlisle is an Associate Professor in the Environmental Studies Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She specializes in agroecology, sustainable food systems, and regenerative agriculture, with a focus on scaling agroecological practices and addressing systemic barriers in farming. Her research emphasizes collaboration with farmers, particularly in Montana, to explore soil health, climate justice, and equitable agricultural policies.
Carlisle holds a Ph.D. in Geography from UC Berkeley (2015) and a B.A. in Folklore and Mythology from Harvard University (2006). Before academia, she worked as a country singer and an aide to organic farmer Senator Jon Tester. She has authored three influential books on regenerative farming and contributes to academic and popular media on food policy and sustainability.
Her work highlights the intersection of ecological stewardship and social justice, advocating for Indigenous land management practices and dismantling structural inequities in agriculture. Awards include the Montana Book Award and the Green Prize for Sustainable Literature for her book Lentil Underground.
