Dr. Alasdair Gordon-Finlayson is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Northampton, affiliated with the Centre for Psychological and Sociological Sciences. He holds a PhD from Liverpool John Moores University (2012) on 'Becoming Buddhist' in Western contexts, an MSc in Consciousness & Transpersonal Psychology (2003), and a PGCE in Higher Education Teaching (2005). His research focuses on social/cultural psychology, religion/spirituality, and qualitative methodologies like grounded theory.
Alasdair is Course Leader for the BSc Psychology (Counselling) program and has contributed to transpersonal psychology education. He is an ordained Soto Zen Buddhist priest, leading the StoneWater Zen Northampton meditation group and volunteering as a hospital chaplain. His work bridges academia and spiritual practice, exploring themes like mindfulness, meditation, and identity formation in religious contexts.
Recent research includes studies on therapeutic alliance in counseling (2024), cross-cultural social perception models (2021), and supervision practices in undergraduate psychology (2020). He actively supervises PhD students in areas like religion, mindfulness, and altered states of consciousness.
