Alanna Bergman

Alanna Bergman is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at UVA School of Nursing, specializing in global health equity and infectious disease stigma. Her NIH-funded research examines structural barriers affecting TB/HIV care engagement in South Africa and Tanzania, focusing on marginalized populations with substance use disorders.

With clinical background as an HIV specialist and substance use nurse practitioner, Bergman integrates community-based interventions with policy analysis. She developed frameworks for understanding intersectional stigma (TB/HIV/poverty) and advocates for patient-centered care models in resource-limited settings.

Her publications address mental health in infectious disease care, vaccine responsiveness in immunocompromised patients, and resilience among Black older adults. As Assistant Editor for the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, she advances scholarship on stigma as an independent morbidity factor.

Bergman's fieldwork includes designing harm-reduction strategies for outpatient TB treatment in South Africa and developing home-based contact management systems in Ethiopia. Her research prioritizes co-creation of interventions with affected communities.
