Dr. Alana Ogata is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), jointly appointed in the Faculty of Science. Her research focuses on developing bioanalytical sensors and bioinspired nanomaterials for diagnostics, particularly in gynecological health and women’s healthcare. She leads the Ogata Lab, which emphasizes patient-centered design to address unmet clinical needs. Her work integrates analytical, materials, and clinical chemistry to advance point-of-care technologies.
Dr. Ogata holds a B.Sc. from the College of William & Mary, a Ph.D. from UC Irvine under Dr. Reginald Penner (with a visiting scholar stint at KAIST), and completed a NIH T32 postdoctoral fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She has been recognized with the NSF GFRP Fellowship and NSF GROW Fellowship. Her lab actively recruits postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, and fosters collaborations with engineers, chemists, and clinicians.
Key research areas include single-molecule bioanalytical sensors, bioinspired nanomaterials, and rapid diagnostics. She advocates for mentorship, diversity, and inclusion in STEM, aiming to cultivate a supportive research environment. Her team’s recent publications highlight advancements in microfluidic devices, enzyme activity profiling, and SARS-CoV-2 antigen detection.
Dr. Ogata’s lab also emphasizes patient engagement, collaborating with individuals with lived healthcare experiences to ensure technologies are user-centered and equitable. She has secured over $500K in funding and maintains active partnerships in clinical translation and material discovery.
