Alan Taylor Zehnder is a Professor and Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs at Cornell University's Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He holds a B.S. from UC Berkeley (1982), and M.S. and Ph.D. from Caltech (1983, 1987). His research focuses on nanoscale fracture, nonlinear dynamics of nanomechanical systems, and damage tolerance in polymers and composites. He has served as a visiting scholar at institutions like Caltech and Vienna University of Technology, and held roles such as Senior Faculty Fellow at the Naval Surface Warfare Center.
Research interests include nanoscale system behavior, surface effects on material strength, and advanced manufacturing. He teaches engineering mechanics, materials, and fracture mechanics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Awards include the Sia Nemat-Nasser Medal (2021), SEM Fellow (2019), and ASME Fellow (2013).
