Alan Tait is a Senior Lecturer in Strategy at the University of Portsmouth’s School of Strategy, Marketing and Innovation within the Faculty of Business & Law. He specializes in strategic thinking under uncertainty, leveraging process and practice theories to critique conventional strategic management approaches. Tait has contributed to management development programs for public sector organizations and industries like maritime and healthcare. He served as co-chair of the 2015 British Academy of Management Conference and as Faculty Conference Lead since 2017, significantly boosting conference hosting activity.
Research Interests: Tait’s work explores uncertainty’s impact on strategy, emergent strategy-making, ethical dimensions of uncertainty, and synergy in corporate strategy. He draws insights from philosophy and sociology to challenge taken-for-granted strategic practices. Recent research includes studies on WWII-era accountants in the Special Operations Executive and moral hazard in knowledge exchange.
Awards: In 2024, he co-recipient of the Accounting Historians’ Journal Award of Excellence for his work on John Franklyn Venner FCA. His projects include a 2023–2026 initiative to integrate Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion into corporate strategy for Entec International Ltd.
Teaching: Coordinates modules like Strategy Development in Uncertainty and Strategic and International Management. Active in professional networks, he chairs workshops on topics like ‘Strategic Professionals as Knowledge Workers’ and ‘Responses to COVID-19’.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the Centre of Excellence in Defence, Risk & Resilience, and contributes to interdisciplinary projects blending strategic theory with real-world organizational challenges.
