معرفی
Alan Palazzolo is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, holding the James J. Cain Professorship I. He leads the Vibration Control Electromechanics and Flow Lab, focusing on rotordynamics, magnetic bearings, fluid film bearings, and energy storage systems. His research integrates computational methods with experimental validation, addressing challenges in mechanical systems such as thermal instability, vibration suppression, and fluid dynamics.
Palazzolo earned his Ph.D. (1981), M.S. (1977), and B.S. (1976) in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Physics from the University of Virginia and University of Toledo, respectively. His work spans diverse applications, including geothermal drilling dynamics, hemodynamic assist devices, and aerospace propulsion systems.
His research interests emphasize computational fluid dynamics (CFD), nonlinear vibrations, and rotordynamic stability. Notable contributions include pioneering studies on the Morton effect (thermal bow-induced instability) and advancements in high-temperature magnetic bearing systems. He has authored over 300 publications and holds several patents.
Palazzolo’s honors include the ASME Best Paper Award (2014, 2016), the Lifetime Achievement Award in Magnetic Bearings (2012), and the R&D 100 Award (2003). He is a Fellow of the ASME and a Senior Fellow at Texas A&M’s Engineering Experiment Station.
Key research sponsors include NASA, the Department of Energy (DOE), and the Army Research Lab. His lab collaborates on projects ranging from flywheel energy storage to vibration-attenuation systems for drillstrings.
